A new spray park is open at Pioneer and Fairfax Road, Bakersfield, California.
Wednesday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the opening of the Pioneer Spray Park.
"This is the only park east of Mt. Vernon for east Bakersfield, and it's been kind of ignored for a long time," said Kern County Supervisor Mike Maggard, who grew up off of Chester Avenue and remembers coming to the same park when he was a kid.
"I've always had a heart for the park," said Maggard.
Before Wednesday, Maggard, along with children and parents living in the community, said there weren't many activities in the neighborhood, and it was too hot in the summer to play at the park.
"There is really no place for these kids to go in this blistering heat and the summertime here. They don't have pools in their yards, and there's no other resources for them," said Maggard.
He did some research and found a grant that would give the community money for developing a spray park with recycled water.
